Rider guide

The route, timing and talking points for the rider giving this tour. Guests are welcome to read along. About 55 minutes at stops, plus riding time.

  • Two clusters: the Drag and East Austin, and South Congress and South 1st. Allow 10 minutes a wall for photos.
  • Route: Start at the Hi, How Are You frog on Guadalupe, ride south across the river to South Congress and South 1st, then back across to East Austin. Walls change: ride the route before each season.
  • Agree the fare before the ride. Austin requires it, and the fare has to be posted in the cab.
  • Up to three guests per cab, everyone over six in a seat.
  • Don't ride on the Capitol grounds or UT campus roads (state property) or on hike-and-bike trails. Narrate from the street.
  • The Pfluger Bridge and the sidewalks beside the Lady Bird Lake bridges are fine to ride.
  • Weekend nights, 6th Street is barricaded: don't enter without APD permission. Stage at Brazos or Red River.
  • Don't supply alcohol. Guests can drink in the cab, no glass.
  • Ride the route yourself before leading it, and check anything marked 'check' in the talking points.
  1. 1

    Hi, How Are You frog

    about 10 min

Where to stop: On the Drag: pull to the curb on Guadalupe or 21st, mind the bus lanes.

    • Painted in 1993 by singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston, based on his album cover.
    • Kurt Cobain wore the Hi, How Are You shirt at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards.
    • When the building was redeveloped, the wall was saved. Austin marks January 22 as Hi, How Are You Day.
  2. 2

South Congress and I Love You So Much

    about 15 min

Where to stop: SoCo gets crowded. Stage on a side street (James or Elizabeth) and walk guests to the wall.

    • I Love You So Much was spray-painted in 2010 on the side of Jo's Coffee by musician Amy Cook, for her partner Liz Lambert.
    • It's the most photographed wall in Austin. Expect a line on weekends.
    • SoCo is boots, vintage shops and food trucks, with the Capitol framed at the end of the street.
  3. 3

    Willie for President

    about 10 min

Where to stop: Close to I Love You So Much: walk guests between the two.

    • Willie helped make Austin the Live Music Capital, starting with the Armadillo World Headquarters days in the 1970s.
    • There's a statue of him downtown too, outside ACL Live on Willie Nelson Boulevard.
  4. 4

    Greetings from Austin

    about 10 min

Where to stop: On South 1st near Annie Street. Pull into the side lot if it's clear; otherwise drop and wait on the side street.

    • Painted in 1998 by Todd Sanders and Rory Skagen.
    • Each big letter holds a little Austin scene. Ask guests to spot the Capitol and the bats.
  5. 5

    East Austin murals

    about 10 min

Where to stop: Murals change. Ride the route before each season and update the stop list.

    • East Austin's mural tradition grew from Chicano art in the 1970s and '80s.
    • You're My Butter Half on East MLK is the couples photo of Austin.
    • Walls change often here: new pieces appear and old ones get painted over.
